Today, we have the pleasure of hearing the second half of Terri Coley’s interview. This episode, like the first, (ep 29) is full of wisdom around parenting kids from hard places, but really, any parent will benefit from listening-whether your child is “homegrown,” or adopted.
The material Terri and her husband, Dan, have championed for a decade is based on research done by the late Dr. Karen Purvis and her colleague, David Cross. They wrote about their extraordinary findings in a book called, The Connected Child. Their “trust based relational intervention” system (TBRI) has revolutionized the way thousands of us relate to our kids.
If you’ve ever felt regret over a parenting mistake you’ve made (and who hasn’t???) there is hope found in concepts we discuss here like “neuroplasticity” and “recovery of function recapitulates development of function.” (Wait till you hear me trying to get through some of these terms in the outtakes.) In short, Terri tells us that scientific empirical evidence is in our favor- the human brain can be rewired after a rupture in a relationship or even long term trauma.
Terri expounds on why the primary emotion for many children is fear. And how play tears fear apart. You’ll hear why it’s important to give your child “a thousand yeses.” Terri also confesses an obsession she has with her own behavior and I offer her a challenge to see it in a different light.
She tells us why anyone and everyone can glean something from the Empowered to Connect conference – there are over 400 simulcasts happening globally so far… If you are in the Nashville area, come to as many sessions as possible. This year, it will be held live at Church of the City in Franklin on April 7th and 8th. Get details at showhope.org
I will give you an update today on my Lent observation and why I love the word “practice.” You will find links below to the resources and apps we discuss plus a fabulous, grin-worthy article by MaryBeth Chapman entitled “A Whimsical God.” And Steven Curtis Chapman’s stirring song of redemption called, “Beauty Will Rise.” It still takes my breath away every time!
Terri’s charity of choice is of course, Showhope. Go check out their website- it’s been updated and it is STELLAR! The images of children are absolutely precious.
