Hey Love,
I’m wondering- do you believe there is such a thing as modern day idolatry? If so, do you know what your primary idol is? I’m learning that idols usually fall in one of these 4 groupings; there’s the comfort idol, the security idol, the power idol and the approval idol—Bingo!! (That’s the biggie for me. It also happens to be the one that today’s guest confesses also.)
The episode number is 63, which happens to be the year I was born. I know 1963 probably sounds
to you like The Stone Age, doesn’t it? I’ve struggled with my approval monster ever since around then, basically… I’ll tell you today how I’ve learned to starve my idol; how to put it to death… and
how that’s brought new, REAL life to me.
I’m also going to play you an excerpt from a sermon I heard recently which really speaks to this topic. Rob Sweet is Lead Pastor at my church in Nashville and he took a passage in Acts 17, where
the Apostle Paul observes all the idols of Athens, Greece and engages the philosophers of the
day around it; he didn’t set out to prove them wrong, but displayed a passion to bring them the truth about the Real Thing; the One and Only who can actually provide life.
I’ll confess to you something that very recently triggered me to feel tempted (to place my identity
in a number!) and how the Holy Spirit used a friend to help me lay my pet monster down. So what
might’ve been meant to bring me way down actually turned into a real victory for this former
approval addict. I can’t say the addiction is completely gone- the temptations are real- but as
Rob shares today, there are ways to flee from the temptation, to stop “feeding” your idol, no matter what it looks like in your life.
I’ve always been partial to this passage of scripture (Acts 17) because I used to have a journal
as a young girl that I called, “Letters to an Unknown God.” I’ll tell you how the Unknown made Himself clearly known.
Wanna get to know Rob better? He’s coming back in next week; this time for an actual interview. Join us for that. It’s gonna be good!
