Terri Coley is with us today- in this first half of her two part interview, she will be sharing some of what she’s learned over the last 3 decades working with children from “”hard places.”
When she and her husband, Dan, started fostering and adopting children back in the 1980’s, they had read every book, tried every behavior modification method known to man, but found themselves still struggling to help these children with unique needs.
When Dan first introduced to her the book that started it all, The Connected Child, Terri threw the book at his head. No, really, she did. Literally.
But after reading it, she knew this material was different. The Coleys immediately found themselves wanting to inject this system of attachment intraveneously to the parents they’d been coaching- this is the book that “launched a thousand conferences.”
Together with the authors- Karen Purvis and David Cross, the Coleys began teaching and speaking to eager audiences at the Empowered to Connect conferences. Over the years, these conferences have grown exponentially and have equipped thousands of parents like me with practical solutions for issues that few counselors could touch back in the day- issues like Reactive Attachment Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder…
If you’re like me, you’ve made some mistakes in your parenting history… today’s conversation will encourage you to take heart. If you’re familiar with TBRI (trust based relational intervention,) you know this stuff really does shoot hope into your veins. And the paradigm shift affects all relationships; not just parent/child.
Stick around for the outtakes where Terri shares a short redemption story that made us both tear up.
The next ETC is happening in Nashville April 7th and 8th- check for a simulcast in your area and tune in next week for part 2 of this interview with Terri Coley. Be encouraged- you’re not alone; you were NEVER meant to do this job alone. Come to the conference, start a parent support group, get help!
